Other so-called "natural" brands (hardwood lump charcoal) usually include such materials as pallets, slabwood, flooring, softwoods, furniture remnants, or construction material. Go ahead and check your "natural" brand of hardwood charcoal ... if you see flat, squared, or dowel-shaped pieces, you'll know you're cooking with scrap woods.
Leading national bricquets are composed of semi-anthracite coal with sulfur, lignite, sodium nitrate, limestone, borax, charred sawdust, petroleum binder/starch binder.

And NATURE'S OWN never harvests trees solely to make charred hardwood. We use the tree limbs and trunks which do not meet lumber specifications to make our Chunk Charwood™. Those that are cut down are immediately replanted. The hardwood is aged for an average of one year, then baked in the kilns, removing harmful creosote and resins. Grain alcohol, a natural fuel, is used to fire the kilns, never petroleum. That avoids petroleum residue in the NATURE'S OWN Chunk Charwood™.

There's no need to soak our fresh-cut woods before use. In contrast, our competitors' grilling woods are dry, requiring soaking for 3 hours before use to prevent flaming.

How Should NATURE'S OWN Fresh-Cut Woods Be Used?
You should use NATURE'S OWN Wood Chips, Wood Chunks, and Wood Logs any time you want to add unique flavoring to your foods. They can be used with your gas or electric grills and smokers, or along with your natural charred hardwood. Either way, you'll be providing a distinctive taste to your grilled foods.
Use NATURE'S OWN Wood Chips for backyard grills where the space between the fuel and the grate is close. Use the Wood Chunks (approx. 3" by 6") if you have a large grill and plan to do slow cooking. Wood Logs (14-18" wide and 4-7" in diameter) are great for a large oven or barbecue pit.
